Progress in context

How the progress estimate works

The Reading Planner estimates how long it will take to read a work based on its word count and the median reading speed of about 230 words per minute. This is only an estimate, as individual reading habits vary, but it can help you decide which book to start next.

The archive's median word count is about 81,000, which corresponds to roughly 353 minutes of reading. However, individual works range from under 20,000 to over 200,000 words. The planner categorizes them into Quick, Steady, Immersive, and Marathon, so you can filter by the time you have available.

Quick Reads

Works under 30,000 words, estimated to take less than about 2 hours. There are 15 such titles, ideal for a short sitting or a first taste of an author.

Steady Reads

Works between 30,000 and 70,000 words, taking roughly 2 to 5 hours. The archive has 15 of these, a good fit for a weekend read.

Immersive Reads

Works between 70,000 and 150,000 words, requiring 5 to 10 hours. There are 41 titles in this range, offering substantial engagement without being overwhelming.

Marathon Reads

Works over 150,000 words, taking more than 10 hours. The archive includes 20 such epics, for when you want to spend days with a single life story.

Reading Tracker

Planning a Page-by-Page Journey

The Reading Tracker turns a book's length into a manageable plan. It records your current page, total pages, and a daily page goal, then estimates how many days remain. Progress is stored in your browser, so you can close the tab and return later without losing your place. The tracker does not measure minutes or sections; it works in pages, the unit most readers naturally use.

Setting the Total Page Count

When you start a book, the tracker estimates the total pages using a standard of 250 words per page. For An outlaw's diary: the Commune — Themes and Context (id 297), which has about 95,200 words, that gives an initial estimate of roughly 381 pages. The tracker also shows an estimated reading time of 414 minutes, but that is a separate figure; your progress is measured in pages.

If your edition shows a different page count—perhaps due to introductions, notes, or larger type—you can replace the estimate with the total from your reading app or physical book. This keeps your daily goal realistic and your finish date accurate.

Choosing a Daily Goal

The default daily goal is 20 pages, which would finish the outlaw's diary in about 19 days. If that feels slow, you can raise the goal; if it feels rushed, lower it. The tracker calculates finish days as the remaining pages divided by your daily goal, rounded up. A 30-page goal would cut the time to roughly 13 days, while 10 pages would stretch it to 39. The choice is yours, and you can adjust it as you go.

Estimating Time and Staying Flexible

The tracker also estimates remaining time proportionally: if you have read half the pages, you have used half the estimated minutes. This can help you gauge For readers who are on pace for a weekend finish or a month-long read. Because the estimate is based on your own progress, it updates as you move.

If you miss a day, the finish date shifts. That is not a failure; it is a recalibration. The tracker does not require an account, and your history lives only in your browser. You can start, pause, or abandon a book without penalty, and the numbers will always tell you where you stand.
